Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • ¾ cup buttermilk (room temperature)
  • ¾ cup hot water
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 large egg whites
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar (lightly packed)
  • 1 ½ cups unsalted butter (cubed, room temperature)
  • ¼ cup dulce de leche (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix wet ingredients: vegetable oil, buttermilk, hot water, eggs, and vanilla until smooth. Gradually add to dry ingredients and mix on low speed until just combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gently fold into the batter until no white streaks remain.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for about 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow cakes to cool in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.
